The owner of a long-established café in Melbourn plans to retire, and the business is now seeking a new owner.

Michael Curuk has owned the Teapot in the Phillimore Garden Centre on Cambridge Road, Melbourn since 2009.

He has now engaged Blacks Business Brokers to find a new owner, and the business is being marketed with a guide price of £94,995.

The café seats 60 people indoors, and is able to accommodate a further 40 customers in an outdoor dining area. In its most recent financial year the business turned over approximately £200,000.

The concession in which the café is located currently incurs annual rent of £15,600. A new lease will be negotiated as part of the sale of the business.

Currently the café is particularly popular with older customers, who enjoy the homemade pies which are the owner's speciality.

Its regular customer base also includes cycling clubs and a sewing club - with the latter visiting the café twice a week.

As well as serving homemade pies and specials, the Teapot sources its fruit and vegetables locally from Fieldgate Nurseries in Meldreth.

The business currently employs four full-time staff, including a supervisor, in addition to Mr Curuk and his wife, and a further four casual staff who work at weekends.

According to Mr Curuk a new owner would not necessarily need a background in catering. He is a self-taught cook whose background was in business.

Amy Page, customer service executive at Blacks Business Brokers, said: "Both Phillimore Garden Centre and The Teapot are extremely popular locally and, located just off the A10, attract business both from North Hertfordshire and South Cambridgeshire.

"The café has a loyal clientele and experienced staff, meaning a new owner could take over with minimum disruption.

"Michael has developed a really successful business over the past 14 years but there is also plenty of potential to build on his achievements by, for example, establishing a website and boosting the café’s social media activity to attract a wider demographic."
