OPERA fans can enjoy one of Mozart's great works in Cambridge this weekend.
Figaro Opera will present Cosi Fan Tutte, the ironic and witty comedy, at Sidney Sussex College Chapel on Saturday.
The professional cast in period costume will combine sublime music with a story of love and infidelity.
Cosi Fan Tutte follows the suave and cynical Don Alfonso who aided and abetted by the maid Despina, bets Ferrando and Guglielmo that their sweethearts Fiordiligi and Dorabella will be unfaithful within 24 hours.
They accept, agree to follow his instructions, and plan how to use their winnings.
The result of this specially abridged version is a classic Mozart romp with a bitter-sweet ending.
Figaro Opera, based near Cambridge, was formed in 1993 by singers Penelope-Anne Fletcher (soprano) and John Williams (tenor).
They succeeded in presenting professional opera among other musical productions to the people of East Anglia.
Previous productions include A Masked Ball, Don Giovanini, Don Carlos and The Marriage of Figaro.
The first performance of Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte took place at the Burgtheater in Vienna on January 26, 1790.
Although the subject matter did not offend Viennese sensibilities of the time, it was considered risqué throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The opera was rarely performed but after the Second World War, it regained its place in the standard operatic repertoire.
Cosi Fan Tutte will start at 8pm.
There are four other dates to choose from throughout September.
Tickets cost £15 and are available by calling 01223 357851.
