CHRISTINE Aziz's first novel is set in an Orwellian future, in which the world is governed by an intricate network of totalitarian corporations.

Each is responsible for a particular product, with a work-force conditioned only to produce it, but there are always subversives secretly operating to preserve the past. A group called the readers smuggle and store books in a secret library hidden in the house of Jephzat and her family.

After her sister disappears under suspicious circumstances and her parents are mysteriously relocated by the Company, Jephzat is introduced to a library, and as her knowledge grows, so do her questions.
