Aimi Percival has been a fan of peerless Mary Poppins star Julie Andrews ever since she first trod the boards as one of the Von Trapp tots in a 1992 production of The Sound Of Music at Hitchin Town Hall.

And now the Stevenage-based singer is taking her devotion to a new level, by staging a showcase of the star’s greatest hits and more.

Aimi hopes that her Truly Andrews tribute, which was warmly received when she previewed it last year, could be the start of something big if it gets picked up as a touring show.

But for now she’s firmly focussed on the date at Stevenage’s Gordon Craig Theatre on Tuesday afternoon.

The 2.30pm performance will feature songs from Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and other films, as well as some lesser-known numbers from the Andrews back catalogue.

Personal favourites of Aimi’s include the heartfelt Feed The Birds from Poppins – “I could cry every time I hear it” – and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

“That’s my favourite to sing in the show,” she says. “I challenge anyone to not sing along or at least tap their feet if they don’t know the words.”

A feelgood show with lots of audience singalong is the aim, she says. “I don’t want to give too much away, but it is a production for any fan of her many projects.

“I hope the production will grow and I’ll be able to tour it. My fingers are crossed for interest from other venues. West End? Yes, please!”
