WITH the World Cup just around the corner, it's reassuring to know the major labels have not missed out on the opportunity to cobble together another ramshackle compilation of odds and ends.

And so we have England - The Album 2006, which revisits some familiar territory from previous football compilations, including Three Lions, Vindaloo and the 1970 World Cup theme Back Home.

Our sense of English pride is massaged clumsily by the inclusion of Land of Hope and Glory, performed by the Central Band of the RAF, and the Dambusters March - once again playing up to the somewhat bizarre comparison between a series of football matches and the most significant global conflict in human history.

More modern acts are represented by Graham Coxon, Ant and Dec, Republica and The Bees, but it is the flag-waving anthems that people will respond to most warmly.
