THERE is a veil of secrecy surrounding this, Dylan's 44th release. Everyone who has heard it has signed a contract to ensure no details of what it actually sounds like are printed or spoken of. This could mean two things: a) that Modern Times is a future classic that the Columbia Records doesn't want to spoil for us or b) it is unspeakably awful and Columbia Records doesn't want to spoil its sales.

Dylan fans, of course, will be hoping for the former. Modern Times forms the final part of an unofficial trilogy that began with 1997's Time Out of Mind and was continued with Love and Theft.

The album features 10 tracks recorded with his super-tight touring band, and rumours abound that the recording captures the energy of the group's live performances.
