TOMMY Steele has become something of a national treasure.

He went from a youngster who would stand outside the London Palladium in awe to actually appearing there in the leading role of the musical Scrooge.

In between there were the days of rock-n-roll and his maturing into an entertainer playing the leading role in the likes of Half a Sixpence and Finian's Rainbow.

This is an engaging autobiography in which Steele recreates his early days in the south London working class borough and childhood in which he witnessed the devastation of the Blitz.
