BEATRIX Potter is still the 20th century's most beloved children's writer and illustrator.

But in spite of her acclaim, she struggled to have her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, published.

The rest, however, is history with characters such as Squirrel Nutkin, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Tom Kitten and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle delighting generations.

Much of Potter's life has remain unknown, but has been uncovered here in Linda Lear's autobiography.

It shows a strong and independent woman, who left a lasting legacy when she gave much of the land she owned in the Lake District to the National Trust.
