THE LATEST exhibition at Curwens' gallery is now open to the public and features work by two artists from the area.

Rae Cook and Leilani Jeevaratnam, both from Bassingbourn, will be displaying pictures at the gallery, which is at Curwens solicitors' office in the High Street, Royston, for the next two months.

Mrs Cook, who trained in London and has a degree in fine arts and art history, uses acrylic paints in her work.

She said: "My overall aim was to produce pieces of artwork that created a pleasing, calm and thought-provoking effect."

Mrs Jeevaratnam has also tried to create a calming effect. She is a self-taught artist who has previously exhibited in Sri Lanka and Germany.

She said: "I want people to be able to look at the paintings and feel relaxed. This exhibition represents about two years' work for me, and I'm very happy to have the chance to put the paintings on display."

Both artists were quick to praise the Curwens gallery, which opened earlier this year.

Mrs Cook said: "It's really good to have a permanent forum for local artists - it's something new for Royston.
