IT really is an end of an era. After some 42 years and more 2,000 editions Top of the Pops is coming to an end.

But it gives producers the opportunity to delve into the archives and show clips of such acts as the Rolling Stones, Sonny and Cher, Madonna, and, well, obviously, the Spice Girls.

It gives an excuse, too, for the likes of Jimmy Saville, Tony Blackburn and Mike Reid to return to our screens.

To be really nostalgic about the days of Top of the Pops one essential part of those early days is recalled in Pan's People: Digging the Dancing Queens (BBC2, Sunday, 11.10pm).

They were, after all, what made Top of the Pops worthwhile in the 1970s.
