E L Doctorow
(Abacus)
E L Doctorow is one of those authors who has the ability to take the details of history and turn them into a novel.
In The March he turns his attention to the American Civil War, and in particular the Union Army's march through Georgia.
This was when Atlanta was destroyed and Savannah captured.
There are not any real heroes in Doctorow's novel and even such a towering figure as General Sherman does not get much sympathy.
