And he has vivid memories of the times and the horrors of when he was a machine gunner with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.
He was one of the survivors of Passchendaele: seen as the slaughter of a generation.
There is much compassion in his words and a search for the reasons behind the war which, as has been said, was the war to end all war.
