MANICS fans can relax - James Dean Bradfield's solo album is an impressive effort from the man that has avoided being the centre of attention for so long.
Named after the railway line that runs deep into the heart of his beloved Wales, The Great Western was produced in Wales, Berlin and London and draws inspiration from a slightly wider palette than the recent run of sloppy albums from his parent band.
The influence of fellow Welshman John Cale is apparent here, but Bradfield has held on to that defining sound that made the Manics famous.
The personalities of Richey Edwards and Nicky Wire will forever dominate the Manic Street Preachers, critical reception, but this album confirms the long-held suspicion that it is James Dean Bradfield's unique ability as a guitarist and songwriter that truly defines the band.
