Already set to be a Christmas best-seller, this affectionate yet frank biography of the popular broadcaster is written by one of the people who knew him best.

Kathryn Apanowicz went on her first date with Richard Whiteley when she was just 17. They had an on-off relationship over the ensuing years, finally living together until Whiteley's death in 2005.

The book covers his years studying at Cambridge; his job at ITN in the 1960s; the successive deaths of his sister, mother and niece; the satisfaction with which he received his MBE; his time as a political reporter and journalist and his pride in Countdown.

The series often filled the top five slots in the channel's ratings and earned him his position as one of the nation's best-loved presenters.
