Two drama school graduates, who share a passion for creating theatre and working with youngsters, are putting the two together as start their own children’s drama school in Royston.
Kate Gwynn is from the town and saw it as a perfect place for the new venture, Divergent Drama, which she has founded with Vicky Sheldon, her acting school classmate.
“We found that there wasn’t anything like it for children in the town.” Vicky said.
“Children had to act from scripts already written, but we think they should be creative, and learn to write their own stories and design their sets.
“Classes are also designed to build confidence and improve social skills.”
Vicky and Kate have been holding drama clubs at Petersfield Primary School in Orwell and Barrington Primary School, which they are also going to continue next term.
“We have had a really positive response from kids and parents.” said Vicky.
The pair, who met at the Academy of Live and Performing Arts and both graduated two years ago, divide their time between teaching and continuing to act.
Vicky has performed at the National Theatre in London and both women have toured with theatre companies.
Kate has always wanted to run her own company and is very excited for the future of the new project.
“Having current actors running affordable classes means that children get insider knowledge, connections and up to date information about the industry,” she said.
“It’s especially important for our older children who may be considering a career in the arts.”
Classes will run on Saturdays in term time, for children aged five to eight, eight to 12, and 12 to up to 18 years old.
The classes will be held at Market Hill Rooms in Fish Hill in late September. Go to the website divergentdrama.co.uk for more information.
