START spreading the news...I'm leaving today. I want to be a part of it...No, not New York, but one of its finest exports - Fun Lovin' Criminals. Having created a new style of music that other bands, such as Everlast, Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit have drawn upon for inspiration, the band combine hip-hop and jazz rhythms with more traditional sounds. But what really sets them apart is their ability to make a credible piece of rock music out of styles and instruments that were previously considered boring. The trio began life in 1993 when frontman Huey found himself working at New York's Limelight bar. There, he met bassist Fast, and the band's first drummer, Steve-O. The three became roommates and ended up writing songs together in their apartment until they had enough material to convince the Limelight's manager to let them play a gig at the club. Their sixth performance was seen by an EMI hot-shot, and the rest, as they say, is history. In 1996 they released their first album, Come Find Yourself, which included the hit singles The Fun Lovin' Criminals, King of New York, and the UK number one, Scooby Snacks. Fast forward through 100% Colombian, drummer number two - Mackie, a Christmas album, another album Loco, a best of collection, a new record label - Sanctuary Records - drummer number three, The Rhythm Man (Frank), and their latest album Welcome To Poppy's. Which brings you bang up to date with their forthcoming tour, which will see them play at The Junction in Cambridge. "Our albums are like our children," said Fast. "It would be like having to choose your favourite child. "We don't feel our music is designed for kids - we don't feel we should be going on a kids show and waving balloons. "We've done it before and we'll probably do it again, but it would be like The Terminator doing it. "Our music is for people who have got away from their parents and are learning their own rights or wrongs. We've got to play the game a little more seriously now." - Fun Lovin Criminals are coming to The Junction in Cambridge on March 2.
