English Touring Opera brings three shows to Cambridge Arts Theatre, Verdi’s Macbeth on April 2 and 5, Mozart’s Idomeneo on April 3 and 6 and Rossini’s Elizabeth I on April 4.
The witches have a prophecy: Macbeth will be King. But royalty comes at a price. Follow Macbeth in a blood-soaked journey to the throne and watch a guilt-ridden Lady Macbeth descend into the depths of despair, sung in English.
Sung in Italian with surtitles, King Idomenio returns from the Trojan War and promises the raging seas that he will sacrifice the first person he meets in return for safe passage. Cruelly, the first person he sees is his only son, Idamante.
Rossini’s Elizabeth I, also in Italian, contrasts the private and public spheres of her life.
