THE Junction, in Cambridge, is gearing up to showcase some of the most cutting-edge sounds in the UK. One of which is Kano, who will be appearing with special guest David Banner. Kano, 20, isn't your typical garage music rising star. He had schoolboy football trials with Chelsea and Norwich City and then turned his attention to graphic design. But he rejected a place for more study at Greenwich University to concentrate on a music career. He will be joined by ambitious rapper Banner, who has been described as one of rap music's most intriguing talents. Banner has come a long way from the poverty and gang violence of the Mississippi basin in America's Deep South. It was a cousin from the north who turned him on to the sounds of New York innovators - and by 16 he was cultivating his production techniques on a keyboard sampler and finding inspiration from such groups as NWA, A Tribe Called Quest and Outkast. Banner stormed the Billboard album charts with his 2003 major label debut Mississippi - the Screwed and Chopped Album and the critically acclaimed follow-up MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water. His third release, Certified, finds the gruff-voiced artist expanding on his mix of street anthems and politically-charged rebel music. - You can see Kano and David Banner on Thursday, March 16, at 7.30pm.
