USUALLY when bands pronounce their work to be deep and meaningful, it means listeners will be treated to songs lamenting lost loves or championing the latest cause.
But this is certainly not an accusation that can be levelled at GoodBooks, whose debut album Control covers such diverse themes as the Bible, Kafka, and the 7/7 bombings.
Control starts with Beautiful to Watch, an edgy tale of murder reminiscent of Jenny Was a Friend of Mine by The Killers. Death continues to echo through the album, particularly in Turn It Back and the current single Passchendaele, but despite the sombre lyrics the songs remain strangely uplifting.
Control is a likeable album, and fans of the likes of REM or the Magic Numbers may well be adding it to their reading list.
