But Brian MacArthur has collected a mass of detail about the men who served on the Western Front to produce a piece of work that is both moving and a tribute.

And as we move towards the 90th anniversary of the end of the Great War it is appropriate to have such a reminder of those dark days.

MacArthur takes the accounts of those in the trenches of the Somme and elsewhere to give an account of both the horror and occasional joy of those who were sent to serve.
