But it is complicated as a number of stories begin to reveal themselves which, at times, does lead to a certain amount of confusion.
But that said it is a masterpiece of directing from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and screenwriting from Guillermo Arriaga.
Brad Pitt gives a solid performance in the leading role and Cate Blanchett again shows that she is an actress of immense power and strength.
And in support there is an outstanding performance from Rinko Kikuchi as a deaf-mute Tokoyo teenager.
