Chicago director Rob Marshall adapts Arthur Golden's best-seller for the big screen with the beautiful locale and lush cinematography that one would expect.
The story, set in 1929, follows a desperately poor nine-year-old girl, Chiyo, who is sold to a Geisha house and treated cruelly upon her arrival.
Thankfully, she is taken under the wing of Mameha, and is trained in the artistic and social skills required of a geisha. She finds herself in a world of privilege and intrigue as the Second World War looms large and the world of the geisha looks set to be irrevocably altered by history.
The film attracted controversy on its release for the decision to cast Chinese actresses in the central Japanese roles, but Memoirs of a Geisha won acclaim for the high quality of acting on show.
