TWO goals in a dazzling 60 second spell secured all three points for Royston Town against Leverstock Green on Tuesday evening.

With the score at 1-1 and with Leverstock piling on the pressure, Royston broke quickly down the left through Luke Robins whose fiercely hit low cross was put into his own goal superbly by a sliding Lee Johnson and just moments later Tom Malins headed home another Robins cross after finishing off a move he had started 40 yards back.

It was, on reflection, a deserved win for Royston but there was a feeling that if Leverstock Green had spent less time arguing with the officials and more on playing football they might have actually got something from the game.

As it was, Royston's counterattacking was too much for the visitors to handle and the three points will have gone some way towards lessening the pain of defeat at Colney Heath on Saturday.

Colney, who had gone top of the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division with that victory, lost 4-0 at home on Tuesday against Chalfont St Peter suggesting that this league is anyone's for the taking this season.

The game on Tuesday took some time to get started with Royston making most of Robins' pace down the left, but crosses into the box were often too close to the visiting 'keeper for anyone to create anything from.

David Cain headed over on 17 minutes and Leverstock had a handful of poor shots off target before Lockett got hold of the ball on 35 minutes and in the slowest move of the match walked his way through the heart of the defence before placing a low shot wide of the 'keeper and into the goal.

It was a lead Royston preserved until the interval, and one they also deserved.

The second half though was a different matter as Royston looked a bit vulnerable in the air with Leverstock having plenty of heading opportunities in a good spell of pressure on the Royston goal.

There was a moment of controversy when the visitors had a goal ruled out for offside only for the referee to allow Royston to take a quick free kick while the Leverstock players were still celebrating, but luckily for the visitors, and the officials, the move came to nothing.

Leverstock equalised on 71 minutes when Johnson headed home and this began a 13 minute passage of play which saw another three goals.

With Leverstock now level they twice had the chance to go ahead through a couple of headers, both of which just missed the target, and they were made to pay between the 77th and 78th minutes when Royston hit them twice on the break.

Four minutes later Jorden Gibson was forced into a neat low save from a Leverstock free kick and he pulled off a sensational stop from five yards when he tipped a shot onto the bar, but after the ball had been put out for a corner the ball was whipped in and Gibson couldn't do anything to stop the unmarked Matt Wardle's header.

The goal was the last of an exciting game of football, and with it Royston moved up to fifth in the table.
