PLUCKY Georgie Stoop was unable to become the first British woman to make it into the second round at Wimbledon after losing her first round tie against world number seven Vera Zvonareva.

The Great Chishill star entered court 18 this afternoon (Tuesday) on level terms with the Russian after their match was halted late last night at one set apiece, but despite an injury to her right ankle Zvonareva had enough in her locker to take the tie 7-6 4-6 6-4 and set up second round tie against France's Mathilde.

The match was Stoop's first ladies singles tie at Wimbledon having missed out last year through injury, but she will return to court later this week when she begins her ladies doubles campaign with British teenager Laura Robson.
