REED skipper Marcus Martin has promised to learn from his sides 28-run defeat at league leaders Hatfield on Sunday.

Having won the toss and elected to field, Reed opening bowlers Richard Johnson and Andrew Wholley grabbed two early wickets each to leave the hosts struggling at 57/4.

However, Hatfield's middle order showed resilience, and despite some impressive bowling from Mitchell Cooper, they reached 214-7 off their allotted 40 overs.

Fergus Martin and Phil Frenay opened the batting for Reed, and put on 44 for the first wicket, Martin falling foul of a harsh lbw decision.

Frenay continued to score freely, and looked well set for a big score before he was caught in the deep for 45.

Two further quick wickets left Reed on 59-4, before a good partnership between Matt Bowles and Ed Blissett got Reed back on track.

Bowles hit five fours before departing for 24, and was replaced by Karl Ward, who scored a quick fire 13 before being bowled.

Graham Hazard then picked up the mantle with a season's best score of 50, including seven fours and a six.

Unfortunately it was not enough to stop Reed falling short, and they were all out for 186 with three overs to spare.

Marcus Martin said: "We are hugely disappointed to have lost, but we will learn from this.

"We should've capitalised in the middle period after making a good start.

"But the positives are there - we are a very young side and bowled well.

"Andrew Wholley was brilliant and Jason Pallett and Mitchell Cooper excelled against good opposition.

"Phil Frenay batted well at the top of the order, and Graham Hazard was excellent at the end.
