THE league cricket season drew to a close for many teams at the weekend - and while several were celebrating promotion, Royston suffered a third successive relegation.

Their demotion to the CCA Senior League Division Two was confirmed just before they lost their final match, away at March II

Captain Craig Holson, who missed the game through work commitments, said: "We're obviously disappointed to be relegated again, but it's been coming for a while.

"We've had key players out for big parts of the season, and it's hindered us."

Holson feels the future is looking brighter, thanks to the club's thriving youth scheme.

And he hopes more locally-based players will join before the new season.

"We've got a core of lads in the side from Royston now," he said.

"That hasn't always been the case in the past.

"There are lots of good cricketers in Royston, and they should be playing for the town's club rather than travelling all over the place to get a game.
