Royston Town U18s 6 St Ives U18s 0

Royston Town Youth demolished St Ives Town on Wednesday evening.

As the scoreline suggests, this was a comfortable win for the U18s who, at times, played some of their best football of the season.

Some exceptional passing moves created ample opportunities to possibly make the scoreline much greater but the finishing was not always as clinical as the approach play.

Three goals in each half launched Royston back to the top of the Ridgeons Youth League in what is shaping up to be a close season.

George Duffin opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he netted from the edge of the area after Ryan Webb’s shot had been blocked by the ‘keeper and Webb doubled the lead in the 22nd minute with a well placed 20-yard effort into the corner.

Ollie Pemberton swept home a third just before half time latching onto a good cross from the right before Royston really laid siege to the visiting goal in the second half.

Full Back Matt Hodgson scored the goal of the game on 67 minutes when he placed a fine 25-yard effort into the net off the underside of the crossbar and Jordan Spencer bundled home the fifth five minutes later from Ryan Webb’s fine cross.

It was left to 16-year-old debutant Jake Leighton to score with his first touch after coming on as a substitute when he was on hand to convert Spencer’s cross.

Ben Worbey had a twice taken penalty saved, Jahmel Mullings hit the crossbar and many other chances went begging before the full time whistle went.
