BUNTINGFORD Town's youth team have made it through to the county cup quarter final for the third time in four years after seeing off North London opponents AC Finchley.

And despite only having played two competitive games since the end of November, the young Town side impressed with their effort and hard work.

Arron Welch almost put them in front after 10 minutes, only to see his close range effort bounce off the post after some hesitant Finchley defending. However, the hosts were soon in front when a fine move saw Ricky Young turn in Josh Bronti's low cross.

Four minutes later the lead was doubled when the referee played a good advantage, with Bronti thinking fast with a fantastic angled drive into the top corner.

At the other end, the visitors offered little threat with the Town defence more than comfortable in snuffing out their chances.

And when goalkeeper Jorden Gibson's mammoth clearance eluded the visiting defence and finding the path of Young, Town were awarded a penalty when the pacy striker was brought down.

The centre-half could consider himself more than fortunate to stay on the field, although Jamie Morriss added to his woe when he stepped up and smashed home a confident spot kick.

Welch went close again, when he headed Bronti's cross inches over the bar as Buntingford continued to dominate with their attractive football.

The second half was more of an evenly balanced affair, with Town's lack of match fitness beginning to show.

Gibson made two excellent blocks to help maintain Buntingford's three-goal advantage, while at the other end both Bronti and Young went close with two fine efforts.

Substitute Rob Verdia had the ball in the net twice for Town, but were both ruled out for debatable offside decisions, however, by that point the game was all but won with Buntingford setting up an exciting quarter final tie against Cheshunt Youth.
