TONY Hawkins opened his 2009 account at Heydon Golf Club by winning the prestigious Sir Donald Tebbit Trophy.
On a windy morning when incorrect club selection caught out many of the players Hawkins mastered the conditions and ended with a very creditable 39 stableford points.
Sir Donald, who has sponsored the competition for many years, was on hand to present the trophy on a rather sad day for the Heydon membership as they learnt that long time regular Reg Neville had died of a heart attack.
Captain Tom Woods announced that the funeral would be at Cambridge Crematorium today (Thursday, April 30) adding: "Reg will long be missed for his cheerful and witty presence"
The winners of the Venerables Winter Greensomes Trophy were also announced last week and after the long winter and some matches not played in ideal conditions the victors Gordon Honour and Ron Webster where presented with the trophy.
