Simon Thomas continued his hot streak in front of goal to guide Royston Town to a well-deserved three points at their bottom-half hosts Fleet Town.

The former St Albans City frontman made it five goals in as many games since his Garden Walk move at the end of January. Substitute Ryan Towner got the crucial second in a dominant away day on Saturday.

A cagey opening saw little action in front of goal until the 17th minute when Ryan Ingrey shot wide.

At the other end, it took a good save from Ron Yates to keep the score goalless at half-time with the big man diving full length to palm a firm shot round the post.

The sticky pitch was still hindering play but in the 57th minute, the deadlock was broken. The elegant and deceptively languid Thomas spun and finished well after some good persistent work by Rhys Hoenes.

Defending their slender lead, Yates showed good presence with a solid block as Fleet tried to ruin the visitors’ day.

The game stumbled on with the Crows fighting hard to retain their advantage.

On 86 minutes the away side increased their lead with what looked like an offside goal.

Hoenes again combined well with Thomas, who unleashed a snap-shot that was bravely blocked by a Fleet defender, but looped up to find the alert Towner’s head, who nodded in from a position behind the advanced keeper with only a lunging defender on the line.

This goal was well-received and vital for the win, especially as the persistent Fleet team scored themselves on 91 minutes to pull one back.

Towner’s goal was to end the difference for Royston to poach all three points and scarper back to Hertfordshire. They remain fourth, five points off the top, with Beaconsfield SYCOB up next.
