CAMBRIDGE United have appointed Jimmy Quinn as their new manager following the sacking of Rob Newman two weeks ago.

The former Northern Ireland striker is an experienced manager, with spells at Reading, Peterborough and Shrewsbury, whom he guided out of the Conference - if he can manage the same feat with United this will prove a very popular appointment.

Chairman Lee Power, who was due to get married yesterday, declared himself "delighted" with the new manager, saying: "He's a great person and I am sure he is the right man to take us forward."

Quinn watched from the stands as United finally secured their first win of the season, 1-0 at home against Stevenage Borough.

Marcus Richardson scored the only goal in the first half, after a sustained spell of pressure on the away goal, but after Ritchie Hanlon was sent off just before half-time for a dangerous tackle, it was a heroic defensive display in the second half which secured the three points for the U's.

The new manager was delighted with what he saw, and revealed after the game that he had said a few words to the players in the dressing room at half-time: "I had a few words with one or two individuals about focusing on the job at hand, and they did very well."

Quinn went on to make it clear that he expected that kind of performance and work-rate in every game: "I'm quite sure that if the players go out and play with the passion and commitment they showed on Saturday then the fans will always stay behind them, but I won't put up with people not giving their all for the club."

- The U's next game is at home to Aldershot on Friday, kick-off at 7.45pm.
