THE combined Freman College and Edwinstree girls' athletics squad finished their season in style by winning the Bishop's Stortford and District 40th Annual Athletics Championships.

The two schools had a superb season on track and field, with Freman College's head of PE Andrea Roach praising both sets of athletes.

She said: "The two schools have set up a wonderful partnership, with the Edwinstree pupils making up the Year 7 and 8 sections.

"As the head of PE at Freman, it looks like we'll be getting a number of talented athletes our way very soon."

The win is a marvellous achievement for the Buntingford schools, with their partnership also coming out on top last year.

Ms Roach said: "To win the trophy for two years running is brilliant and I'm really proud of the girls. They worked really hard and recorded some amazing times."

Many of the squad set new personal bests and school records at the Wodson Park Stadium, with Freman's Steph Sattin equalling the district schools under-17 300m record.

She said: "I got a time of 42.9, which I was really pleased with, especially as the record has stood for 14 years - it's nice to have my name in the record books!"

Katie Grehan collected a hat-trick of wins in the under-17s sweeping aside her rivals in the 100m, 200m and the shot.

More success followed in the under-15 events, with Chloe Gardener winning in the 200m, Lucy Hewson first in the 800m, Kara Meadows the 1500m, and Emma Jennings the shot.

Hannah Sweetman also became a district champion in the high jump and said that she was "ecstatic" with her victory.

Edwinstree athletes also added to the points total, with Victoria Rutherford claiming second place in the 800m and fourth place in the long jump, and Daisy Holmes finishing third in the 100m.

Overall Edwinstree and Freman girls totalled 363 points, with Saffron Walden finishing second with 354 points and St Mary's finishing third on 330 points.

With the boys' squad finishing fifth overall, the combined position of the schools was third, with St Mary's claiming top spot and Saffron Walden finishing runners-up.

Ms Roach said: "It's been a brilliant season and the girls have had a lot of success, including in the Herts County League and the Nicky Morris Challenge.

"To be honest I've been surprised at just how well they have done.

"They certainly exceeded our expectations, and this was a great way to end a fantastic year.
