A MAGNIFICENT captain's performance from Gordon Barnes set Royston Table Tennis Club's C team on their way to victory in the final of the Division Two McClaughlin Inter Cup, at Hitchin on Monday. Facing leaders Broadway C, something special was going to be needed, and Barnes provided it by winning all his three games. Terry Bailey managed one win from his three, so the match was level at 4-4 when young Haydn Gowan came to play the crucial final game. Having lost his first two games, the pressure was intense, but he coped superbly against a more experienced opponent to seal a rather unexpected 5-4 victory. n Royston were unable to maintain their improvement in last weeks NHTTA league fixtures, recording just one victory and two draws from the five matches played. The victory was obtained by the C team in Division Two, where two singles apiece and the doubles from Gordon Barnes and Haydn Gowan and a single from Andy Termal, gave them a narrow 6-4 result against Broadway D. Their Division Two colleagues the D team could manage only a 5-5 draw at Bedwell E, with two singles from Rob Vassalls, one each from Derek Clark and Larry Marez, and a Vassalls/Merez doubles success. In the Premier Division the A team also recorded a 5-5 draw, against division promotees Bedwell AVC, thanks to Paul Robertson's three singles and the doubles with Kevin Moore, who also won one singles. But the B team found high-flying Bedwell A far too strong as they went down 10-0. And in Division Three the E team did better second time around against time around against third-placed Christchurch B, but still lost 7-3. Andy Termal won two singles and Fred Bendell one.
