Greneway School’s swimmers teamed up with Meridian School to win individual and team golds at the North Herts Schools’ District Finals in Hitchin.

The Year 7/8 boys and the Year 7/8 combined teams won gold and, along with Meridian School, Greneway won four individual golds, one silver and eight bronze medals.

There were many other impressive swims from the Greneway and Meridian pupils with one championship record, three new school records, many all-time list places, PBs and some making their championship debut.

In the Year 7/8 girls’ class, Evie Harrington won the 25m butterfly, setting new championships and school records, and in the 25m butterfly, Jono Adam broke the school record.

The Year 7/8 girls’ team of Dina Parcell, Harrington, Emily Pendrick and Daisy Needham set a new standard of 1:07.08 for the freestyle relay.

Terry Graves, Greneway’s assistant headteacher, said: “Once again Greneway teamed up with Meridian to be one of the ‘Best Mixed Schools’ overall.

“The successes once again showed the importance of the partnership between the schools and Royston Swimming Club, with most of the swimmers representing both.

“It also emphasised the importance of strength in depth with many swimmers having to show their versatility across events as illness took out six of the original team.”

Russell Franklin, Meridian’s head of boys’ PE, added: “The swimmers worked hard for each other this evening and it was great to see them step up and even swim less favoured strokes.”
