ROYSTON'S relay swimmers starred as the club won 11 races in the final round of the Hertfordshire Major League division three, at Bishop's Stortford, on Saturday. The under-12 girls and under-16 boys came first in their freestyle and medley events as Royston finished in fourth place. "The squad was tremendous," said coach Tricia Dear. "We had 11 firsts and a lot of seconds - their best performance for some time. I was very pleased." Buntingford's Christina Branch, 16, finished third in the 200m backstroke and her team-mate Georgia Makin, 11, gained top-10 rankings in the backstroke and individual medley. Royston swimmer Alex Snowden, 11, secured a top-10 age-group breaststroke ranking when he competed against the best in Hertfordshire at the annual county championship meeting. Eleven-year-old Millie Farmer, who represented Royston but is also a member at Buntingford, achieved a top-15 age-group backstroke ranking at the annual gala, held over three weekends in Borehamwood. Dear said: "They were competing against the best in a very large and very strong county. "It's an achievement they should be very proud of. There are scores and scores of swimmers in their age groups at swimming clubs in the county and only the top 30 or so qualified for the meeting. "Their aim now must be to improve this year, move up the rankings at the 2007 meeting and qualify for the regional championships. "Royston Swimming Club's aim is to get more swimmers to the county meeting. "We've got another four or five who have the ability to do it and I think they will next year.
