Greneway’s Year 7 basketball team are Herts Schools U12 champions for the fourth time in the school’s history.

In their group games they ended up playing four tough matches, which would be a test for any team. Their first match saw them take on Three Rivers & Watford champions who had already won their first match and were used to the court.

Any advantage was soon reversed as Greneway won comfortably 16-4. Stevenage were up next and the NE Herts champions cruised to a 20-2 victory with all players making a contribution. The next match was a pivotal encounter as it matched the two unbeaten teams: Greneway and John Warner (A10).

In the best game of the tournament so far, Greneway narrowly lost 12-10.

In their final group game they entertained the St Albans winners and once more, using the whole bench, they had too much for their opponents and won 22-6 to book a place in the semi-finals.

Essex & Herts School (Birchwood) were the opponents for this ‘Final Four’ match up and both teams were desperate to progress to the finals. Greneway, however, looked the fitter, quicker and more skilful as they raced to a 8-2 lead at the interval.

After the break, Greneway continued to dominate all phases of play and ran out deserved 20-2 winners. This superb result meant a place in the final against their group nemesis, John Warner.

John Warner were not prepared for the all-court onslaught that a fired-up Greneway team threw at them.

Greneway played some of their best basketball of the whole day and led 6-4 at the break.

Smelling victory, the Royston school could have eased off but not this team and they continued to work tirelessly for one another and caused John Warner problems all over the court to greet the buzzer as 9-4 victors and Hertfordshire Schools’ U12 Champions for the fourth time in the school’s history.

“The teamwork, determination, resilence and skills shown by the girls today were breath-taking, every player made a valuable contribution to the success and made a very experienced teacher extremely happy, said Terry Graves, assistant headteacher/coach.
