FOOTBALL: Buntingford Town's dreams of an FA Youth Cup trip to Arsenal came to an end against Brentford at Griffin Park - but not before a fine performance from Paul Attfield's team.

Facing a club whose first team are EIGHT divisions above their Town equivalent, Buntingford gave a spirited display, and with a little more luck could have snatched a dream tie against the Premiership giants.

The visitors looked to have been thrown a lifeline with five minutes remaining when Tim Jarman was hauled down by Karle Carder-Andrews.

But the referee ignored their prolonged appeals and, four minutes later, the home side wrapped up a trip to Underhill in the third round.

Luke Robins scored the Town equaliser after Brentford had scored an early goal, but when Ide sent a perfect cross from the right for Lewis Dark to tap home.

GOLF: Seventy golfers and their guests attended the trophy night dinner at Heydon Grange Golf and Country Club.

The most prolific winners for the 2005 season were Tina Broadly and Dawn Glennie, who amassed 11 trophies between them, plus a share in the County Grace Norman competition won by Heydon Grange ladies' section.

Mel Marks was the leading men's winner with four trophies, and the most consistent golfer for the year and Ataxia Order of Merit winner was Martyn Waring with 125 points. Second was Mel Marks with 115 points and third was Scott Auger with 103.

BMX: Richard Townsend led the way with a third place as Royston Rockets hosted round two of the East Anglian Winter Series.

Townsend took the bronze in the Formula 1 class, two places clear of clubmate Jonathan Roberts, while James Dalleywater took fifth in the B final.

The track was frozen for the first half of the event but, as the sun came out, parts of the track thawed on the surface.

It left a layer of sludge which got into the bikes' mechanisms and the riders clothing to make the final part of the day very unpleasant, although the 80+ riders that took part enjoyed some very competitive racing.

SWIMMERS: Fifty-three youngsters swam a total of more than 30 miles during a Royston Swimming Club sponsored marathon aimed at raising money for hurricane victims in the southern states of America.

Club coach Tricia Dear challenged swimmers aged between seven and 16 to swim as many 25-metre lengths as they could in 20 minutes.

The total distance swam topped 46,000 metres.

Three teenagers swam 1,500 metres or more and more than 20 children swam more than 1,000 metres.

FOOTBALL: A brave performance from the Crows could not stop them slipping out of the Herts Senior Cup against Watford.

The Hornets took the lead just after the break, but an own goal put Royston back on level terms, before two extra-time efforts sent the Hornets through.

A mixed month saw Royston manage a pair of league wins, but the trip to Harefield was best forgotten as they slumped to a 6-0 defeat.

HOCKEY: Jenny Carroll and Sarah Buckerfield helped Royston Ladies to hammer De Montfort University 6-0.

The home side only led 2-0 at half-time, but a dominant second half gave them their biggest win of the season.
