ROYSTON Golf Club, held its first men's medal of the year on January 7, at The Heath. Although the snow caused some concern, the course was in excellent condition, although the unnatural north-easterly wind did cause problems for many players. In Division One (0-12 handicap), Adam Woods returned an excellent gross score of two under par 68 (nett 65) to win by four shots from Robert Clark. Phil Neep was third, also with a nett 69. In Division Two (13-28 handicap), one of the longest serving members of Royston Golf Club, Mike Phizacklea, piped Steve DeFraine on count-back, both with nett 67s. With a field of almost 100 players, the New Year is off to a good start and Professional, Sean Clark, has donated a trophy for the most improved handicap on percentage reduction. The figures from last year suggest that many of the juniors will be in the reckoning. The recent Texas Scramble on Bank Holiday Monday resulted in a gross 59 for the team of club champion, Stuart Phillips, Adam Woods, Jack Yetton and Alan Warner. Despite their 11 under par total, they only won by one shot from the husband and wife teams of David and Kathy Musgrave together with Gerry and Val Squires.
