FOWLMERE failed to turn possession into points on Saturday as they slipped to their third league defeat of season.

Head coach Steve Walker said "it was just one of those games" as he saw efforts cleared off the line, fine saves from the Girton keeper, and 20 corners.

He said: "We were certainly the better team, and at times played some very good football, but the goal never came!"

Against the run of play the hosts took the lead when a long ball over the Fowlmere defence left 16-year-old stand-in goalkeeper James Chamberlain stranded.

However, the visitors hit back with Dan Caley creating chances for both Danny Mizon and Steve Cooke.

Fowlmere lost defender Steve Paul with a broken tibia following a late challenge on a Girton striker.

And with the Girton players letting their frustrations over the tackle show, Walker lost captain Matt Poole, dismissed for violent conduct.

"I think that was the turning point," said Walker.

"Before the incident we were very much on top. It was disappointing to see Poole sent off, and perhaps he over-reacted, but that happens in football.

"If the referee saw fit to send him off then perhaps one or two of the Girton players should have gone with him.

"But I have to give Girton credit, because they're a decent team who are on a good run of form.

"We looked much better than last week and there were a lot of positives to take."

- Fowlmere entertain Sawston Rovers on Saturday, who jumped over Fowlmere in the table after their 3-1 win against Duxford United.
