Great Chishill 6 Withersfield 1

CHISHILL bounced back from their cup exit last week, with a good win to keep their promotion bid on track.

It was not as easy as the scoreline suggests for the hosts, especially after Withersfield took an early and well-deserved lead.

Throughout the first half Chishill lacked the cutting edge, and had Ian Gallagher to thank for keeping the score down.

As for the Withersfield keeper, only a Gary Radford half-volley, and a tame Paul Gibson effort tested his ability.

But after the break Chishill tore into their opponents from the off.

Elliot Drury played Steve McGee through to level the scores, and from then on the gates opened for Chishill.

McGee had a volley saved, and Jonathan Drury slid home the rebound, before netting his second and Chishill's third.

Nick Bramwell added a fourth with a fine header, before Withersfield lost their heads as well as their temper, and as a result went down to 10 men.

With a man to the good, the home side went about completing the rout, with McGee notching his hat-trick.

First he rounded the keeper for a tap in, before completing the scoring with a 25-yard strike.

On Saturday Chishill travel to Harston in the league.

Steeple Morden 0 Bassingbourn 1

STEEPLE lost to the only goal of the game in a fiercely contested derby clash with Bassingbourn.

Heavy overnight rain made playing conditions difficult, but it was Bassingbourn that adapted the better, especially in the opening exchanges.

And the visitors would have certainly taken an early lead if not for Steeple defender Kieran Smith, who made two great goal-line clearances.

Steeple began to find their way midway through the half and played some entertaining football, with Ben Holt seeing a 20-yard drive tipped over the bar.

The hard-working Joe Morris also came close and was unfortunate to see a couple of efforts fly wide.

In the second-half, Morden's keeper Brian Sarll was called upon to make two close-range saves, but after the second a Bassingbourn forward reacted quickest and smashed home the rebound.

As Steeple pressed for an equaliser, man-of-the-match Paul Hutley tried his hardest, but the visitors held firm.

They almost snatched a goal when a late free-kick found Holt, but he headed wide.

The final whistle followed shortly and ended another frustrating afternoon for Steeple, who are at home again on Saturday, against league leaders Elsworth Sports.
