ROYSTON Rugby Club held a development afternoon at Meridian School this week.

The session was part of the club's ongoing community partnership, set up to promote rugby in schools.

Royston head coach Kevin Green and club coach Jamie Johnson led the session, and were joined by teachers from Icknield Walk, Roman Way, Meridian, Steeple Morden, Petersfield, and St Thomas of Canterbury.

Green said: "The training session was set up to give teachers support and advice on teaching and coaching rugby in schools.

"We are combining these sessions with our policy of in-school support from the club's coaches, and Jamie and I have a running programme of in-school coaching.

"This is development work for the future and is part of our plan of supporting the community, especially the youth of the town.

"This dovetails with our Sunday morning youth, junior and mini rugby that regularly sees 200 or so youngsters at the Heath."

The coaches have also visited Roysia Middle School, Reed, Therfield, and St Mary's Primary, with the initiative being warmly received.

PE coordinator for Icknield Walk Tracy Stimson said: "We very much welcome such input and suppor, and we are all very pleased to be working in partnership with Royston Rugby Club to help promote healthy sports activities for our children."

# The coaches' tour of the schools continues today (Thursday) with a visit to Greneway School for another session of skills and activities.

The programme is set to culminate in a schools tag rugby festival at the Heath in April.

Last year hundreds of youngsters descended on the Heath's pitches.
