ROYSTON was the venue for the Cambs and Hunts Ladies Golf Championship at the weekend - with last year's winner Sarah Attwood retaining her championship title.

The Gogs golfer defeated Link's Caroline Agnew, two up to capture the title at Royston Golf Club - which is celebrating the centenary of ladies golf at the club.

The championship final proved a fairly even contest, with Agnew taking the lead on the first hole after Attwood found a bunker with her drive.

The next three holes were halved in pars before Attwood levelled the match with a birdie at the first par 3.

Both players continued to produce high quality golf, and Agnew regained the lead on the eighth hole.

However, once again Attwood conjured up another birdie on the tenth hole to square the match.

Holes 15 and 16 were halved in pars, and hole 17 produced another half after two superb approach shots resulted in birdies.

On the final hole Agnew missed her approach shot to the green, and with Attwood's approach finding the green and with her first putt, Agnew conceded the hole giving Attwood the title 2 up.

In the County Plate Competition for the second group of 16 qualifiers, Ramsey's Sharren Kjenstad secured a victory in the final.

Kjenstad took an early lead and playing par golf she won three of the first four holes and was four up at the turn.

However, Ely's Lisa Charlton battled valiantly and reduced the arrears to one hole when she won the 12th, 14th and 15th holes.

But Kjenstad gained a valuable half at the 16th to steady her nerve and won the 17th with a par to take the title 2 and 1.

Jackie Gregg won the Allen Newport Trophy for the best scratch score in qualifying ,and the Scratch Bowl for the combined Division 1 and County Championship gross score was won jointly by Sarah Attwood and Jenny McGuigan with scores of 230.

Grace Eastment of Menzies won the gross stableford competition with 23 points, while Royston's Debbie Pitfield took the nett stableford prize with 31 points.
