A SQUAD from Royston Runners won the team event in the gruelling Saffron Walden Triathlon.

Janette Thomas, Richard Lowden, and Graham Hill completed the challenging course in a commanding 1:19.03, despite some difficult conditions.

Thomas led the team with a distinguished 13.58 swim before emerging from the pool and handing over to Lowden, who carried on the good form with a 28km bike ride which covered the south of Saffron Walden in a time of 45.11.

The final leg, which was a 5k trail run, was completed by Hill, who overcame the weather to record a time of 19.54, a time that helped earn Royston the team title.

Royston Runner Paul Wilding competed in the individual section, and improved on his performance last year with a swim of 19.53, a ride of 57.15 and a run of 28.55 giving him an overall time of 1:46.03.

- Elsewhere, the Royston Runners resumed their Midweek League action with a trip to Bishop's Stortford, where the track incorporated farm tracks, roads, and a demanding 1km hill.

The 10k race was started by the Royston men, and headed by Ian Murray who eventually finished in third place.

The highest placed women were Nikki Tyrrel and Michelle Maxwell, who finished eighth and ninth respectively.

Overall, the men finished fourth, with the ladies' team fifth.

The final placings mean Royston retain their fourth place in the league, and importantly, stay out of the relegation zone.
