IN mid-September Royston Rugby Club started coaching for girls who were too old to play mixed mini rugby and the team took part in their first game at the weekend against Stevenage.
Although the score was heavily in Stevenage's favour, with their scrum-half scoring five tries and having a hand in two more, it was a good and valuable outing for the young Crows against a team who have been in existence since last season and already have several games under their belt.
Megan Smith, Chlo Fisher and Lauren Brain stood out for Royston with some immense tackling, mauling and running, while Amanda Beckwith showed a good turn of speed and fearlessness in the tackle that belied her slight frame.
Kelsa Hall and Philippa Baron were stalwarts in the tight and loose and Danielle Sutcliffe, with no previous rugby experience whatsoever, competed gallantly.
Most of the girls are from Meridian School, where they have already received some coaching from their RFU-qualified PE teacher Beverley Boswell.
