Royston Town striker Adam Marriott says he wants to leave Garden Walk and give it ‘one last shot’ in the football league.

After a goal-laden season with the Crows – where they fell just short of the play-offs in seventh place, in the club’s first ever season at step three – Marriott is pushing for a move away from Steve Castle’s side and back up the divisions.

Speaking to CrowSport, Marriott, who hit 31 goals last term, said: “I’m looking to move on, I want to give it one more shot in the conference or the football league.

“I’ve put the work in for Royston so hopefully someone’s seen that and takes a chance on me.

“I’m 27 now so I’m getting on a bit and now’s the time to give it one last shot.

“I’m an ambitious guy and I want to play as high as I can, never say never but I think my future lies elsewhere.”

After his time at Stevenage in League Two was blighted by injury, he left for Lincoln City in 2016 but didn’t play as much as he’d hoped as the Imps won the National League and promotion to League Two.

Instead of following Lincoln into the football league, Marriott took the risk of dropping to step three – where he scored 40 goals in a season in the 2013-14 season for Cambridge City - and joined Royston, in search of regular playing time.

Marriott said: “I think I achieved what I came here for. I played the majority of games and I started feeling good and getting into the routine of playing and enjoying my football.

“My knee has been really good, I do rehab and exercises on it continuously but it didn’t affect the games too much so that’s been positive.

“It’s been good, I’ve not got a bad word to say about Royston, there’s great people there. Just for me and my development I want to play higher.

“I haven’t really had a full season at the conference so I’m looking to get to that level and have a full season to show what I can do.”

Though he’s not received any offers yet, top scorer Marriott’s time at Royston is set to end after a memorable season – finding form with several purple patches including grabbing seven goals in four matches in January.

He added: “It was a good season. There were five good teams at the top of the league with big budgets and big crowds so it was going to be difficult to do much better.

“It was a good season for the club, personally I’d like to have scored a few more goals but I was fairly pleased with what I did and it was mainly about getting games under my belt.

“I was disappointed not to get in the play-offs, at one point I thought we could sneak in but it wasn’t to be.

“The boys didn’t give up all the way to the end and I thought we did well to get seventh.”
