Royston Town’s win streak came to an abrupt end with a 2-0 defeat to Chesham United on Saturday at Top Field.

After a run of seven straight wins, scoring 22 goals and conceding two, the play-off chasing Crows failed to score for the first time this side of Christmas Day.

Jefferson Lewis’ double, a free-kick and penalty, sealed the 2-0 win for Chesham, the end of an nine game unbeaten streak at Garden Walk for Royston, their first home loss in the league since early September. It’s a strange result for Royston, who were riding a wave of superb form.

Speaking to CometSport, boss Steve Castle said: “We had enough chances but the accuracy of crosses and shots were very poor.

“It was a bit against the run of play. We weren’t troubling the keeper enough but we played well. Our finishing was poor but hey didn’t have any chances except the goal. It wasn’t a worthy scoreline at 2-0.

“We were always in the game, we were the team pushing. I thought it would turn around at some stage because we were so on top. It gets infuriating when attacks come to nothing time and again. Hopefully it was just a blip.

“The conditions could have played a part but I think we overdid things in front of goal rather than keeping it simple.”

The Crows were the better side for large periods of the game, and took control for the first third of the game on a soaked Garden Walk pitch. However it was the away side that made the breakthrough. Lewis’ low free-kick deflected off the Royston wall and into the net from 30-yards after 33 minutes.

Royston lacked the finishing touch they’ve found so regularly this year, and Lewis’ penalty was calmly finished after Adam Murray’s foul on Lewis Toomey after 77 minutes, securing Royston’s first loss since early December.

In his blog, Castle said: “I’m trying to be philosophical about the situation and off the back of our good form, I believe it’s the best policy.

“The lads have done terrifically to get us in a position to push up the table, so in my opinion picking on one below par performance would be harsh. Keep the faith people, the lads need everyone’s support.”

On Saturday, the Crows have a chance to bounce back, with a trip to St Ives Town. Although in the bottom four of the league, St Ives are on a five game unbeaten streak after several signings and managerial changes.

Castle added: “It’s a derby, the expectation is that we win because they’re lower in the table but they’ll be up for it and looking to take a scalp just like Chesham did.

“We try to treat each game as individual as possible to make sure that we do the right things and not worry so much about the opposition.

“We’ve still got some games in hand, it’s all about picking up the points and taking it from there.”
