Royston Town chairman Steve Jackson hailed the club's U18s after reaching the FA Youth Cup third round for the first time ever.

Goals from Danny McGovern and Ross Maddox either side of the break handed the Crows a famous cup triumph over Welling United.

Had Josh Castiglione’s second-half strike not been disallowed, the margin of victory would have been healthier but thankfully for Royston, Maddox slammed home in the 65th minute sets up a tie with Oxford City next month.

Chairman Jackson said: “We are only one of four non-league sides still left in the competition to be in the hat with the Premier League clubs is amazing.

“Our success is built on a team ethic rather individuals and that has been the foundation for our success.

“There were scouts there from all over the country including Bolton Wanderers watching both sides, so I’m sure they will have been impressed with what they saw.

With this big win, the Crows’ youth remain unbeaten in all competitions this season and Jackson is confident going forward.

He said: “Our first-team manager Steve Castle has kept a close eye on the lads as he wants to use them in the near future. He has been impressed with them so far and with the way they are playing at the moment, he should be.

“(Josh) Castiglione has been offered a Swindon Town scholarship which he will be embark on soon and Callum Wilson and Connor Kilgannon have been playing in the first team a bit as well so there are some stars here.”

A win over Oxford City would increase the likelihood of a plum tie in the fourth round, leaving Jackson dreaming of the possibilities.

“As a Spurs fan, I would love them but if we could get a Premier League team home or away, that would be brilliant. I think the players would like to play a Premier League side away but this is all in the future. We have to beat Oxford City first and we are focussed on that.”
