ROYSTON UNITED made it five wins out of five with victory over a strong Bar Hill side on Saturday.
In conditions more suitable for the beach, at the start of the game most of United players played like they were on a day out at the beach. They conceded two sloppy goals by gifting the ball to the lively forwards of Bar Hall and they tucked both chances away well. If it wasn’t for some strong tackling and determination from Andrew Kirkpatrick, Royston United could have easily been going into half time more than two goals down.
At half time the management team of Neil Pinner and Wayne Hargreaves didn’t hide their feelings and told the players exactly what they thought and the players took it on the chin.
Changes had to be made and Wayne Hargreaves came on in midfield and from the first whistle he took the bull by the horns and gave everyone the lift they needed and United started taking control of the game.
It was the strength of Nick Ryding which started the comeback for United by forcing the Bar Hill goalkeeper into fouling him and Will Dacey stood up and smashed the ball in the bottom right hand corner. The pressure continued and it was only a matter of when, not if, United would score, and again the speed of Stafford left the Bar Hill defender with no choice but to bring him down and another penalty was awarded before Dacey scored his second.
Bar Hill were then reduced to 10 men and their defence was rocking. A corner with five minute to go was awarded and a goal mouth scrambled resulted with Tom Dolden poking the ball in the back of the net on the line.
Manager Hargreaves said afterwards: “
This was by far the best performance of the season. The players showed real heart and determination but we must play for the full 90 minutes not just 45, so that will be addressed next week.”
