Blackett effort denies Royston Town three points at Barton Rovers

Royston Town showed great second half resolve to come from a goal down but could not secure all three points as they drew 2-2 at mid-table Barton Rovers tonight (Tuesday).
Two Crows goals in nine second-half minutes from skipper Scott Bridges and right back Danny May turned the game on its head after Jordan Davis had put the hosts ahead in the 37th minute.
However, Barton, just like in last season’s Southern League Division One Central playoffs when they knocked out Royston in the final four, were to have the last laugh in this feisty affair as Jason Blackett pounced inside the six-yard box to take advantage of some poor away marking.
Much like in Saturday’s score draw with Uxbridge, the Crows created many gild-edged chances but could not convert in a frustrating first half. Erkan Okay, Rhys Hoenes, Luke Robins and eventual scorer Bridges all went close.
That lack of ruthlessness was to be punished eight minutes before the break as Joe Reynolds flicked the ball over the top of Town’s static defence to Davis who coolly beat Ron Yates.
Credit Royston who delivered a similarly dynamic showing after the interval and bulldozed their way into a 2-1 lead thanks to Bridges’ sidefoot into a gaping goal following good work from Rob Mason and soon after, substitute Ryan Ingrey teed up May to smash beyond keeper Kyle Forster.
Town delight turned to despair 10 minutes later though with Blackett’s instinctive effort pinching a point for the home side.
Next up for Steve Castle’s men is a trip to promotion rivals AFC Rushden & Diamonds on Saturday, weather permitting.
