Tries from John Brain, Louis Dummett and Joe Butcher was enough for Royston to book their place in the London & South East Junior Vase semi-finals on Saturday.

Faced with the tough task of toppling Eastern Counties Division One leaders Thetford, who had won 12 of their 13 league games this season, the Crows were in imperious form and fully deserved their progression.

Mick Jones’ men were hoping to bounce back after their league defeat to London Welsh Druids the previous week.

The cold weather meant that many games in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire were cancelled due to a hard pitch, however, The Heath’s facilities prevailed, allowing the game to go ahead.

The clash began at a fast pace with both Brain and Dummett powering across the line to give the Crows a 10-point lead.

Thetford were not to be deterred and came back with a try of their own, all within the first 15 minutes of the game.

Royston continued their attack but stout defence from the Thetford boys left no change in the score during the rest of the first half.

From the start of the second half the hosts continued their attack, with Thetford continually pushing them back.

Eventually Royston’s determination prevailed as Butcher crossed the line, and Will Dacey, finding his rhythm, slotted the conversion.

It’s back to league action for fifth-placed Royston on Saturday as they entertain London French at the Heath.

The visitors, currently third in the table, were victorious 24-7 in the pair’s previous meeting in October.
